THE
CHILD CANCER FOUNDATION
Over
the past 16 years, the Firefighters' calendar has been extremely
well received by the general public, who look forward to its release
through shopping malls and via the Firefighters themselves.
There
is a natural synergy between our organizations, in that children
with cancer constantly face the challenge to survive this most serious
disease with great courage and determination, just as firefighters
protect our lives and property with dedication, skill and valour.
Each
time a child is diagnosed with cancer, a family is in crisis.
Most of us know of someone, maybe a friend or relative who has undergone
treatment for cancer, and we often feel inadequate in our response.
What do we say, and how can we help?
It
is even more difficult when that person is a child, for surely cancer
is a disease of older people, not children? Unfortunately, this
is not so, and although the numbers of children with cancer in New
Zealand are not high, the psychosocial consequences can be devastating.
We
thank the Firefighters very sincerely for their support and compassion,
in being alongside many families on the childhood cancer journey.
